Vessel's Holiday Lighting Is Back for a Second Year, and This Time the Display Goes Inside

"Event is free and open to the public." That line sits on the Vessel website under the listing for the Vessel Holiday Lighting Ceremony, set for Monday, November 16. A few lines further down is the newer offer, a $10 ticket to "A First Look: Vessel Holiday Experience." It opens a holiday display inside Vessel, including an 18-foot-tall mistletoe installation. That pairing sums up how Hudson Yards does winter now. The outside of the neighborhood's best-known object still belongs to anyone on the plaza. The new layer of the season is indoors.

The move has been steady, one step a year.

Season Vessel's role Display dates
2024 Covered in thousands of lights. The season opened with a choir in The Great Room, with no ceremony at Vessel November 25 to January 5
2025 The first holiday lighting ceremony at Vessel, free, on November 17 November 17 to January 7
2026 A second ceremony, about 120,000 more lights, a new light show, and a ticketed display inside November 16 to January 7

From Ornament to Interior

In the 2024 holiday program, Vessel was decoration. The neighborhood's announcement, as reported by City Life Org, promised it would be "adorned" with lights. The free opening performance, by the Westchester Children's Chorus, took place in The Great Room of The Shops. That season came only weeks after Vessel itself reopened. It had been closed since July 2021, and 6sqft reported that the October 21, 2024 reopening ended nearly 1,200 days of closure. NBC New York reported that the reopening followed a retrofit of floor-to-ceiling steel mesh along the stairwells and platforms.

A year later the structure was the main event. Time Out New York called the November 17, 2025 lighting Vessel's first holiday lighting ceremony since it opened in 2019. The 2025 bill featured Kelsie Watts, the Sing Harlem Choir and the Orchestra of St. Luke's, with Helen Little of 106.7 LITE FM as host.

The 2026 version keeps the ceremony and adds a room to it. The Vessel site describes roughly 120,000 more lights and calls the evening part of a "new neighborhood tradition." The Shine Bright page promises a new light show and a Mistletoe photo experience that turns the icon into "a new holiday experience." For the first two years the holiday version of Vessel was something seen from the plaza. This year part of it is something you climb into.

How Monday, November 16 Unfolds

The evening runs in sequence, and each step is priced differently:

  1. 5 p.m. Doors open for the ceremony at Vessel.
  2. 6 p.m. The show begins. Helen Little of 106.7 LiteFM returns as host, and performers will be announced closer to the date.
  3. End of the ceremony. Vessel lights up with the new light show. The ceremony is listed as free and open to the public.
  4. 7 to 9 p.m. Tickets priced at $10 open the First Look, the first public view of the interior display and the 18-foot mistletoe.

The free ceremony and the paid First Look are separate offerings. Anyone planning to go up that night should book the ticket ahead and not assume entry comes with the show.

What the $10 Ticket Is Measured Against

The First Look price matches what admission cost when Vessel reopened in October 2024, when 6sqft reported general admission at $10. Vessel's visit page now lists general admission from $14 and flex admission from $20. On the night of the lighting, the inside of the structure costs $4 less than on a regular visit, and the holiday display is new to anyone who goes.

The regular schedule shapes any later visit. Vessel is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday. Saturday's early close cuts that day's evening window short, so weeknights and Sundays leave the most time to see the interior display after dark during the season.

The Rest of the Season Has Already Moved Inside

Vessel is following a pattern the rest of Hudson Yards set earlier. The centerpiece of Shine Bright at Hudson Yards, presented by Wells Fargo, has been indoors for several years. A 32-foot hot air balloon hangs in The Great Room of The Shops. The 2026 calendar keeps most of the season under a roof:

  • Shine Bright, November 16 to January 7. More than two million lights across the neighborhood, with 115 miles of string lights, 725 evergreen trees, 16-foot illuminated set pieces and eight 12-foot toy soldiers.
  • Santa at The Shops, November 27 to December 23. Free photos on Level 3, Monday to Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. The listing welcomes "four legged friends."
  • Sip & Shop, December 9, 5 to 8 p.m. Presented by Mastercard, with in-store offers and complimentary Champagne Pommery bars.
  • The Shed, from November 21. Imitation of Life, the new musical by Lynn Nottage and John Legend starring Adrienne Warren, runs November 21 to January 3. Virgil Abloh: The Codes follows December 10 to January 18, with nearly 1,000 objects across 28,000 square feet.
  • Edge, year-round. The sky deck's permanent indoor experience opened June 11, 2026, with seven indoor environments added to the outdoor deck. It is the first winter Edge offers this much to do without standing in the wind.

Take that list together and Hudson Yards' winter mostly happens in a mall atrium, a theater, a gallery and a sky deck's enclosed rooms. The Vessel interior display adds one more covered stop, inside the neighborhood's most open-air structure.

Where to Eat Once the Plaza Trucks Are Gone

The outdoor food season has already ended. Backyard Bites on the Public Square & Gardens, which added the Myka truck in September, served through October 31. For dinner before or after the November 16 ceremony, Elder at 517 West 38th Street, near Tenth Avenue, is one of the area's newer tables. Eater NY listed it as opening August 6.

The bigger change a few blocks south has not arrived yet. The Market Hall at Manhattan West, at Five Manhattan West on Tenth Avenue, was still listed as "Opening soon" on the development's own page at last update. It names Alfalfa, BKLYN Larder, Matchaful, Matter, Shifka, Springbone, Super Burrito and Sushi Counter, "and more to come." Time Out New York described plans for a 34,000-square-foot hall with 12 casual concepts, a full-service restaurant, an indoor bar and a rooftop terrace bar, with no date beyond fall 2026. The July announcement put the two-level hall at 398 Tenth Avenue, with entrances from both Tenth Avenue and Manhattan West Plaza. It also said the Super Burrito team would design and run the bars. Until an opening date is posted, it belongs on the list of things coming this winter.

For residents of these blocks, the details of the season, from where a centerpiece hangs to which rooms open after dark, shape how the neighborhood feels from November to January.
